Samsung Cash Registers to SAM4s: Brand Crossover Guide
Many older commercial cash registers are labeled Samsung even though later service literature, replacement guidance and current products use the SAM4s name.
Why the brand changed
CRS has documented that it became the exclusive North American importer/distributor for Samsung electronic cash registers in the mid-1980s. In 2001, Samsung sold its ECR operation to its manufacturing subcontractor, Shin Heung Precision Co., Ltd. (SHC), and CRS continued the relationship under the SAM4s brand.
What this means when identifying an old register
Search by the model number first, not only the badge. Older manuals, parts diagrams and used equipment may say Samsung while later support references say SAM4s for the same family lineage.
Common examples
- Samsung / SAM4s ER-600 and ER-600R
- Samsung / SAM4s ER-650-family equipment
- Samsung / SAM4s ER-5200/5215/5240-family equipment
- Samsung / SAM4s SPS-1000 and early SPS systems
Replacement rule
Brand crossover does not make a modern SAM4s unit a drop-in replacement. Programming, ports, printers, cash drawers, scanners, scales, payment hardware and polling software still need to be checked by exact model and configuration.
