Merchant processing
Credit card processing for cash registers
A cash register can take cards. How it does decides how much re-keying, reconciliation and cashier error comes with it, and the register and the payment path are decided together, before either is bought.
No rate quoted before somebody has read your statement.
Can a cash register take credit cards?
Yes, in one of two ways. A standalone terminal sits beside the register and the cashier keys the total into it. Some register models support an integrated or semi-integrated payment workflow instead, where the amount is passed to the terminal rather than typed. Which a register supports depends on the model, which is why it is confirmed before anything is bought.
Re-keying is where the errors come from: a total typed wrong, a refund that does not match, a batch report that disagrees with the register. When the amount comes from the sale rather than from a keypad, that class of error goes away and reconciliation matches.
- Standalone: simple, and re-keyedIt works beside any register.
- Integrated: the amount comes from the saleReconciliation matches because nothing was typed twice.
- The model decides what is possiblePayment support varies by register, so it is checked.
- The statement comes firstA rate claim before reading one is a guess with a number on it.
We do not publish rates, and we do not promise savings. Whether a change is worth making is a question about your statement, and we will not answer it before reading one.
The options
Three ways a register counter takes cards
Integration is a choice, not a requirement. These are the real options.
A standalone terminal
Standalone terminalsA separate terminal beside the register. The cashier keys the total, and the terminal settles on its own.
A register with a payment workflow
SAM4s cash registersWhere the register model supports it, the amount is passed to the terminal instead of typed. Confirmed for your model before you buy.
A POS system with integrated processing
Merchant processingThe POS drives the payment and settlement matches the sale. For an Infinity system BizTracker offers two processing paths, Bold and Hybrid.
Cash discount, surcharge or dual pricing
Merchant processingProgram options where they are supported. Whether one can be set up depends on the store’s situation, the processor and program, card-network requirements and the law where it trades, and the register and receipts have to show it correctly.
Where register payments go wrong
-
Totals are re-keyed into the terminal
Typing errors become reconciliation work and chargeback exposure.
The amount comes from the sale rather than from a keypad, where the register supports it.
-
The register and the terminal were bought separately
The terminal does not talk to the register, and the fix is another purchase.
Confirm the workflow, the peripherals and the payment path before a model is picked. Never buy a register or a payment terminal on a model name alone.
SAM4s cash registers -
The statement is unreadable
Nobody can tell what is being charged, or for what.
We read it with you and explain the lines, whatever you then decide.
Statement review -
The contract is found at the end
A change is planned and then blocked by terms nobody read.
Contract terms and any leased equipment are reviewed before a change is recommended.
Register payment questions
Can a SAM4s register take credit cards?
Some models support integrated or semi-integrated payment workflows and some do not. Send us the model, and the payment path is confirmed for it before anything is bought.
Do I have to replace my register to take cards?
No. A standalone terminal beside the register takes cards whatever the register is. The trade-off is the re-keyed total.
Can I offer a cash discount at a register?
Where it is supported. Whether a cash discount, surcharge or dual pricing program can be set up for your store depends on your situation, on the processor and the specific program, on card-network requirements, and on the law and rules that apply where you trade.
When is a POS system the better payment setup?
When payments need to reconcile with inventory, item reporting and employee controls rather than with a daily total. For an Infinity system BizTracker offers two processing paths, Bold and Hybrid.
What do you need to look at first?
One recent processing statement and the register model. The statement shows what the store actually pays; the model shows which payment paths are possible.
Send us a statement and the register model
One recent processing statement and the register you use are enough to say which payment path fits, and whether a change is worth making at all.
